losing my mind

can someone please explain how the word verification acts as a security feature? i just dont get it and it drives me nutso. of course being sick maybe be playing into my irritation. i dont know. just a guess. stab in the dark.

  1. Word verification works as a security feature in that it prevents automated computers from posting spam or registering numerous false accounts. Spam can still be posted, but it requires an actual person to do it.

    The word verification itself hides the word in the box so that it's visible to us but the computer itself can't scan and put it in the box.
